Cervical myelopathy.

چکیده
What are the causes of cervical myelopathy? Myelopathy is caused by any pathologic process that interferes with transmission of signals through the spinal cord. In regard to orthopedic surgery, the most common cause of this disease is due to cervical degenerative disc disease putting pressure on the spinal cord in a condition referred to a cervical spondylotic myelopathy. The remaining references to cervical myelopathy in this interview will refer to this condition. More specific pathologies include disk bulging, herniations, osteophytes, facet hypertrophy, or thickening of the ligamentum flavum. Congenital narrowing of the spinal canal, dynamic changes due to hypermobility, and spinal deformity may also contribute to the disease.

Bilateral C5 Palsy Following a Circumferential Surgery for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: Case Report and Review (In press)
Background and Importance: The development of C5 root palsy is a well-known potential complication of cervical spine surgeries for the correction of cervical spondylotic myelopathy. It typically occurs unilaterally but on extremely rare occasions it might occur as a bilateral anomaly. The value of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring in detection of iatrogenic acute versus delayed onset C...

متن کاملSensitivity of Pyramidal Signs in Patients with Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy
STUDY DESIGN This was a retrospective study. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between prevalence of pyramidal signs and the severity of cervical myelopathy. The study is focused on patients having increased signal intensity in T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE Cervical spondylotic myelopathy is the most common cause of spinal cord ...
متن کاملHuman neuropathological and animal model evidence supporting a role for Fas-mediated apoptosis and inflammation in cervical spondylotic myelopathy.
Although cervical spondylotic myelopathy is a common cause of chronic spinal cord dysfunction in humans, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying the progressive neural degeneration characterized by this condition. Based on animal models of cervical spondylotic myelopathy and traumatic spinal cord injury, we hypothesized that Fas-mediated apoptosis and inflammation may play an ...

STUDY DESIGN National population-based cohort study. OBJECTIVE To compare the reoperation rates between cervical spondylotic radiculopathy and myelopathy in a national population of patients. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA There is an inherently low incidence of reoperation after surgery for cervical degenerative disease. Therefore, it is difficult to sufficiently power studies to detect differ...
متن کاملDevelopment of a self-administered questionnaire to screen patients for cervical myelopathy
BACKGROUND In primary care, it is often difficult to diagnose cervical myelopathy. However, a delay in treatment could cause irreversible aftereffects. With a brief and effective self-administered questionnaire for cervical myelopathy, cervical myelopathy may be screened more easily and oversight may be avoided. As there is presently no screening tool for cervical myelopathy, the aim of this st...
